Noteworthy Facts

• This arch is the eastern terminus of Paris' Historic Axis, and is aligned with the Champs Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Grande Arch de le Défense.
• Built in honor of the French army's victory over Austria.
• The arch was primarily used as a grand entryway to the Tuileries Palace, before it was burned down in 1871.
• The design of this arch was based on the Arch of Constantine in Rome.
• The statue of Peace was created by Baron Francois Joseph Bosio.
• When this monument was originally built, it had the Saint Mark's Cathedral quadriga on top, which Napoleon brought back to Paris as spoils of war from defeating Venice. Venice got the golden statue back after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo.
• The arch is made up of eight columns, each topped with a French soldier. Between the soldiers are reliefs of History, Arts, Prudence, and Victory with the coat of arms of Italy. There are also allegories of Victory, Fame, History, and Abundance with the coat of arms of France.
• Relief of the Peace of Pressburg, Napoleon in Munich, Napoleon in Vienna, the Battle of Austerlitz, the Tilsit Conference, and the surrender of Ulm are by Charles Meynier, and made of rose marble.
