Briefly

St. Louis is home to the Gateway Arch, which at 630 Feet, is the tallest Monument west of the Mississippi River. The downtown is sprucing itself up, with new buildings and stores. The Skyline of St. Louis is ranked in the Top 15, in the United States. The city is home to 387,600 people. The Arch was built in 1963. There are several Tourist Attractions in St. Louis, as well. The Arch is here because it is known to be the city of "The Gateway To The West" where in the 1700s Lewis and Clark explored what was once a "rural town" is now a city of skyscrapers "west of the Mississippi River". Lewis and Clarks' Journey was to find the end of the Mississippi River, but a few miles north of St. Louis, they found the next big river, the "Missouri River". This is why this makes St. Louis the "Gateway To The West". The two mighty rivers join each other just a few miles north of St. Louis. The Arch was a long process of planning for the city. The city wanted to build a huge monument of some sort on the river, while the block where the Old Courthouse and Civil Courts Building stand, that was to try and make a park. Only half the plan worked. Today, the park only reaches where the Gateway One Building stands next to the Wainwright Building. That part of park is known as Keiner Plaza. The other portion of park goes from the Civil Courts Building to the Midtown development. The parks by the Arch and Civil Courts Building opened in 1986.
