As bold as its namesake, Trump Tower is a 58-story bronze tower of glass climbing above Fifth Avenue in Midtown. Located beside famed Tiffany & Co., the mixed-use tower's design is faceted to give scale to the famous boulevard and to visually diminish the enormous bulk of the structure.

Completed on November 30, 1983, Trump Tower was developed by Donald Trump and the Equitable Life Assurance Company and designed by Der Scutt of Swanke, Hayden Connell. As the design of the project progressed, Trump purchased additional air right parcels, constantly enlarging the tower on the same footprint. Ordinarily a building of that height could not have been built on the small site.

The tower itself is a reinforced concrete, shear-wall/core structure. A concrete hat-truss at the top of the building ties exterior columns with the concrete core, increasing the effective dimensions of the core to that of the building in order to resist the overturning of lateral forces (wind, minor earthquakes, and impacts perpendicular to the buildingĂs height).

Within, the structure includes seven levels of retail, 13 floors of office tenancy, and 38 floors of condominiums, all in a luxurious style fitting the neighborhood. The architecture permits up to 13 corner offices per floor and a series of cascading private terraces overlooking Fifth Avenue with sweeping views of Central Park. Most residential rooms have two exposures to the city's skyline.

Interconnecting landscaped walkways lead into Trump TowerĂs atrium of marble, glass, skylights, and waterfalls. Within the atrium are some of the world's most prestigious shops and restaurants. It is a place to see and be seen, as several celebrities and socialites call Trump Tower home.

Noteworthy Facts

• This used to be the location of the Art Deco Bonwit Teller Building, home of Bonwit Teller, once one of New York's most upscale department stores. It moved and its building was demolished to make way for this skyscraper.
• This building was featured in the television show The Apprentice, but the boardroom where the contestants were judged is fake. The real boardroom looks nothing like what was shown on television. The televised boardroom was a set.
• It is said that the apartment floor plans had to be altered during construction when it was discovered that people with corner windows could see into each other's bedrooms.
